Spot Strong Communicators with the Verbal Reasoning Test

Assess candidates’ ability to understand, interpret, and reason using written information.

Verbal Reasoning

The Verbal Reasoning Test measures a candidate’s ability to understand written text, interpret meaning, and assess logic and argument strength. It is one of nine tests in the FinxS Cognitive Ability suite, designed to support confident hiring decisions for roles where verbal clarity and critical thinking are essential.

Use this test to gain insight into how applicants absorb, analyse, and evaluate verbal information; skills vital in roles such as journalism, law, editing, public relations, and consulting.

What Does This Test Measure?

  • Ability to interpret and understand written information
  • Skill in distinguishing facts from assumptions or opinions
  • Logical reasoning based on text
  • Confidence in evaluating arguments under time pressure

Candidates who perform well on this test tend to read efficiently, reason critically, and extract key information under pressure, which are all important traits in communication-heavy roles.

When to Use This Test

Verbal Reasoning is especially relevant in recruitment for roles where written and verbal comprehension are central to success, including:

  • Legal and compliance roles
  • Public relations and communications
  • Research, policy, and publishing
  • Customer service and training
  • Executive support and leadership

How the Test Works

The Verbal Reasoning Test includes 20 questions to be completed in 15 minutes. Each question presents a short written passage followed by a statement. Candidates are asked to decide whether the statement is true, false, or cannot say based on the information in the text.

Candidates begin with a practice item to familiarise themselves with the format. The questions vary in complexity, and the test is designed to challenge even experienced professionals. The average score is 28 out of 100, which helps you pinpoint standout candidates.

You’ll receive a full report within minutes of completion. It includes:
